The paddling season runs from April 1st to October 11th, but reservations are required for visitors. Visitors can customize their trip based on interest and experience; you can rock down some rapids, float down the river, or have fun doing both! General Paddle departs at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. Boat prices for the General Paddle vary based on how long of a trip you choose and what boat you prefer. Kayaks are $40 for two hours and $50 for three hours. Canoes, however, are $70 for two hours and $80 for three hours. Those embarking on an adventure should meet at 37328 Utica Rd, Sterling Heights, MI 48312 to start their excursion.
The General Paddle options offer two to three hours of exploration for visitors. For the three-hour option, launch your journey in Utica and experience tight turns and sandy beaches with ideal swimming spots along the way before docking at one of the E-Z docks near the end. Choose a two-hour adventure beginning from Sterling Heights and meander through Dodge Park while taking in nature’s wonders including wildlife, walking trails, picnic areas equipped with BBQs, and bathrooms! To finish off your Up North expedition relax on the one-hour trek passing by the Rambler Gulf course where old dance hall ruins remain.
The Clinton River has a dramatically diverse topography, in Sterling Heights, between Oakland and Macomb County. In certain areas, there is a considerable decrease in elevation which leads to exhilarating Class II and III rapids perfect for experienced paddlers. However, as the river moves through Macomb it flattens out significantly – offering novice kayakers calmer waters for their journey! The U.S. Geological Survey department utilizes bi-hourly water flow measurements to vigilantly monitor the upper and lower sections of the Clinton River for any changes in its delicate water levels, due to variations in river flows. All data is easily accessible from their website too!
At any given time, fluctuations in water flow and water levels could alter the experience paddlers will have on the river. With that being said, those at Clinton River Canoe & Kayak diligently monitor USGS Water Levels, mainly during and after rainstorms, to find out discharge and velocity data. They also use readings from multiple gages such as Paint Creek or Moravian River combined with visual observations plus years of collective paddling experience to ascertain whether certain sections are safe for a paddle or not enough water is present at all!
There are a few rules when taking an adventure with Clinton River Canoe & Kayak. The number one rule is that your safety is their first priority, so keep in mind that they reserve the right to cancel trips if they feel safety could be compromised. The second rule is that paddlers assume all risk when on the river (that goes for those with their own boats, too)! Rule number three requires participants to do some research, respect the river, and NEVER paddle alone!
Nothing can compare to the thrill of “Getting Your Paddle On” with the Clinton River – not only is it Southeast Michigan’s premier trout fishery, but a host of other fish species such as brown trout and steelhead also inhabit its waters. What’s more? The Great Blue Heron Rookery along the river banks makes for an ideal bird sanctuary in all of Southeastern Michigan!
